I’ve always been a big fan of Russell Brand, and particular how he reacts to the world around him. He is a bundle of positivity, and I’ve NEVER heard him get stuck in a conversation no matter what is being thrown at him. Someone could say the most terrible, hurtful thing, and Russ takes the insult like he’d just been given a bunch of flowers.
In this radio interview, Howard Stern tries is very best to get to Russell. To make him react negatively. To try and ‘break’ him.
No dice.
He has a deep love of himself, and of other people, and I think this is why nothing can touch him. If you have love for yourself, and others around you, anything they say to you, no matter how harsh, is ‘lovely’. Kinda like how your best mate takes the piss out of your mum and you find it funny. You love the guy and know that he has nothing but love for you when he insults your mum! And cause you love the guy and you know that he means you no harm, whatever he throws at you IS FUNNY for both of you.
So I think at Russel’ core, he assumes everyone has nothing but love for him, and with that knowledge he can take whatever is thrown at him and actually USE IT to make something funny.
That’s the key here.
No matter what is thrown at him, rather than rejecting it, or ignoring it (trying to out alpha the other person), he USES it to his advantage to make a joke. And cause there’s a mutual bit of love, Russ uses the other person’s jab to make the situation funnier for BOTH parties.
It’s kinda like…. if you have rock solid self-asteem, and your sense of self isn’t dependant on what other people think of you… then you honestly wont be affected by someone insulting you. So if someone does throw something at you, you can then USE that negative energy and create something out of it that benefits everyone.
In “Improv” circles they call this principle “Yes, And…”
You agree with the other person and then add to it.
And by doing so, NOTHING can affect you. I’ve learnt so much listening to Russel’s podcast and I think the guy is an absolute legend. People who know me probably notice that I do the same thing as Russell, I’m always agreeing with whatever is thrown at me and exaggerating it to make it even funnier for the both of us.
I remember Marcus Oakey teaching this to me when I first met him, and he wrote a fairly long article on it on tsbmag.com which goes into much more detail. But it wasn’t untill listening to Russell Brand where I saw the idea embodied with such mastery, that I truly understood the concept on a deep level.
It’s such a simple concept, but if you master it, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a social master.

This guy is hilarious. He doesn’t really get anywhere because he tries to go for the kisses really quickly without any comfort or connection (plus there’s a camera pointing at them), but his ‘lines’ are hilarious, and delivered in such a self amusing cheeky way that it has the girls in stitches.
